As the Continental Congress gathered in Philadelphia to attend to the business of the colonies, and to debate the notion of independence, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, John Adams, and implored him to “remember the ladies.”

Abigail urged John toward a more egalitarian approach to power: to include women as the Congress created the laws that would govern our fledgling nation. She also warned what might happen if they continued to be exclusive of women’s rights.

Inspired by the strength and prescience of Abigail’s words, composer Julia Wolfe wrote Letter from Abigail for chorus and orchestra, which received its world premiere in April 2022 by the Yale Camerata, Glee Club, and Symphony Orchestra.

Sunday, March 15, 4 p.m., Richardson Auditorium, Princeton University
